Heat Maps: Jackson Heights, by Nitin Mukul

Collaborate with Nitin in creating one of his durational painting, improvisational artworks made by layering paint in sheets of ice, freezing each layer so it accumulates color and texture, and then watching it melt according to natural weather conditions while it’s filmed. As you're making a new one, you can watch an existing one melt in the open Jackson Heights air.

Durational Paintings engage with the micro-atmospheric conditions at the site of their production. The resulting pieces are records of slow transformation, a meditative glimpse into elapsing geologic time. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the Heat Vulnerability Index, how tree canopy and plants are key to mitigating the effects of climate change, and how and why certain neighborhoods are subject to green space inequity.

Join us in a space of collective healing, in which viewers can find space to build empathy with more-than-human forces and how abstract painting might foster durational, borderless experiences.
